Aus der Heimat
hinter den Blitzen roth
da kommen die Wolken her.
Aber Vater und Mutter
sind lange todt,
es kennt mich dort keiner mehr.
Wie bald, ach wie bald
kommt die stille Zeit,
da ruhe ich auch,
und über mir rauscht
die schöne Waldeinsamkeit,
und keiner kennt mich mehr hier

Dietro ai rossi fulmini,
provengono le nuvole;
ma padre e madre sono
morti da tempo,
là nessuno più mi conosce.
Ohimé come arriva presto
il tempo silenzioso,
allora riposerò anch’io,
e sopra di me fruscerà la bella
solitudine del bosco
e nessuno più mi conosce qui

In a foreign country

From the direction of my homeland,
behind the red flashes of lightning there are coming the clouds,
but Father and Mother
died long ago;
no one there knows me anymore.
How soon, ah, how soon will that quiet time come,
when I too shall rest, and over me the beautiful forest's loneliness shall rustle,
and no one here knows me anymore
